Dear foreign friends, an increasing number of people are choosing to develop careers or travel in China. When planning to start your journey by air, it is essential not to overlook the rules regarding baggage carry-on and checked luggage. Before taking international flights with Chinese domestic airlines, it is crucial to understand what can be carried and what needs to be checked, as baggage policies are not arbitrary.

Many Chinese airlines operate international routes, such as Air China, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, etc. These airlines have clear regulations for carry-on and checked baggage, covering aspects such as baggage size, weight limits, and fee standards. Below is a detailed summary of this practical information—packed with useful insights, make sure to understand it all!

I. Air China

Carry-on Baggage

To ensure the safe transportation of checked baggage, your baggage must be completely packaged, with secure locks, firm strapping, and able to withstand certain pressure. It must also meet the following conditions:

  • Luggage should be locked (unless otherwise specified).
  • No additional items should be attached to the exterior of the baggage.
  • Two or more pieces of baggage must not be tied together for checking.
  • Bamboo baskets, net bags, straw ropes, plastic bags, etc., cannot be used as outer packaging for baggage.
  • We recommend attaching an information card to your checked baggage, including at least your name and contact number, so the airline can contact you immediately if needed.
(2) Restrictions on Checked Baggage
  1. Size Restrictions for Each Piece of Baggage
    The sum of the length, width, and height of each checked bag must be ≥60 cm (24 inches) and ≤203 cm (80 inches), including wheels and handles.
  2. Size Restrictions for Free Checked Baggage
    For international/regional flights, the sum of the length, width, and height of each piece of free checked baggage must not exceed 158 cm (62 inches), including wheels and handles.
    Baggage exceeding these size limits will incur excess baggage fees. For domestic flights that form part of an international journey, checked baggage size restrictions shall follow international/regional flight standards.
  3. Weight Restrictions for Each Piece of Baggage
    • Minimum weight: 2 kg (4 lbs).
    • Maximum weight: 32 kg (70 lbs).
      These weight limits do not constitute free baggage allowances. You will need to pay fees for baggage exceeding the free allowance. Baggage exceeding these weight limits will not be accepted for transportation. It is recommended to repack such items or ship them as cargo.
(3) Free Baggage Allowance
(4) General Checked Baggage Overweight Fee Standards

International transportation uses a piece-based fee standard:

  1. The currency used at the baggage check-in counter will apply to the entire journey:
    (1) RMB for baggage checked at departure airports within China;
    (2) EUR for baggage checked at departure airports within the Eurozone;
    (3) CAD for baggage checked at departure airports in Canada;
    (4) USD for all other countries. Overseas non-USD sales units shall convert USD to local currency at the daily exchange rate when collecting excess baggage fees.
  2. Restrictions on the Number of Checked Bags: There is no maximum limit on the number of checked bags per passenger (including regular and special baggage). For passengers requiring to check the 7th piece or more of paid baggage (including regular and special baggage) beyond the free baggage allowance or membership benefits stated on the ticket, prior application to Air China’s sales offices/airports is required, and transportation is subject to flight capacity approval. Additionally, Air China does not guarantee that such baggage will arrive at the destination with the passenger; sales offices/airports should communicate this clearly with passengers.
(5) Baggage with Special Transportation Requirements

Special baggage includes:

  • Small animals transported as baggage, sports equipment and supplies for competitive events, small electrical appliances, instruments and media equipment, fishing gear, musical instruments requiring separate packaging that cannot fit into regular checked baggage, and aquatic products.
  • These items may have slight differences in reservation procedures, packaging requirements, and billing types.
